PostSubject: Softbox   August 20th 2010, 21:37

I would like to encourage you to check out my band Softbox. We are from Prince Albert SK Canada, and our style is ... well difficult for me to define. At times you will hear many different influences as our favorite bands range from Sex Pistols & Ramones to DRI & SOD to Iron Maiden & Judas Priest to Mr Bungle & The Mars Volta to Voivod & Rush. The core of the band is Kurt (myself) : Guitar & Clean Vocals & my long time friend Todd : Drums and Death Vocals. For most of our recording I have played the bass but we are starting to look for another bass player. We have a music player on our site so you can check out several songs, and in the music section you will find links to some of our home-made videos. We released our debut album in 2008 and are nearing the release of our second CD soon. Although I hope to hear kind words I am interested in any feedback. Thanks

Well, that's pretty good!
I like the song 'Silver', although I think the intro lasts too long, it's a bit the same the whole time. But for the rest it sounds so awesome!
Clean voice is good, but while you sing the background music can be a bit more different.

Thanks for checking out our stuff. I just remembered that there are 2 other songs @ anarchy media : Factory and Zero Hour. I think My Right is a pretty good song.

Thanks for the critique on Silver Emma. After we recorded it I did feel the intro was a bit long. I tried to add another guitar part to keep it interesting, but in the end I felt it didn't really work as well as I had hoped. Unlike Geoge Lucas I don't like to go back and change things so for a moment I thought maybe we could do a quick edit, but I think we will let it stand as it is. I have way too much new material to be recorded to be fussing with something that is now over a year old. I'm not sure what part you are talking about for the background music should be different, I'm assuming it is for the clean bridge. I actually like that part because the decending arpeggios (should) give the feeling of falling. The song is about a plane crash. Thanks again, if we ever get a bass player and make it to your area we will be looking for you. (Which by the way is a possibility, I have a guitar player friend who moved there last year!)

PostSubject: Re: Softbox   August 23rd 2010, 15:23

The guitar player was not our guitar player. He's actually a GIT graduate who learned as much Paginini (?) as he possibly could (He actually had to get a special guitar made with an octave of extra frets!!!). These days he is more into the real classics (he is a bit older than me) like Deep Purple, Van Halen, ect. Pretty much anything with cool guitar-work in it. I had always admired him since we met (I think I was 17), and played in a (gasp!) cover band with him for a short while about 10 years ago. He teaches, although maybe not as much now. I will have to ask what city he lives in, I just remember being on Facebook one evening and he PMed me saying it was his last night in Canada. It was a strange conversation, sureal almost hearing that he and his family were flying the next day to Begium. Anyway he was back a few weeks ago, but I had a multitude of problems I had to solve and just couldn't even go for a quick coffee. So if you hear of a tall bald Canadian guitar player with strong Scottish roots playing classic rock on a fender strat (possibly the Yngwie Malmsteen version) with a grey 25th anniversary Marshall stack, check it out!!!! He may still answer to screamin lord Byron. XD

Gear ... gear ... hmm
Well I have stolen my friend Gary's guitar. It is actually my garage bands guitarists but he sold it to Gary years ago and I permanently borrowed it. It is a Ibanez roadstar from about 1987. You can see me using it in the live video for doors, and I think in the practice video for creep. Todd (our drummer) also has a nice Ibanez that I have used alot (in most other videos). I also have a shitty flying V which is in the video for Zero Hour. I have used a bunch on pedals. For the Creep practice I was using a Digitech something-something that was given to me, but it was kinda broken and only worked sometimes. For the first live shows I used the marshall preamp distortion. For recording I think I used my little crappy practice amp for Fallen. That was in 2005, my memory is a bit hazy on that. I may have also used a Boss DS-1 distortion that I loaned to Todd and has disappeared. I used "the weapon" pedal on the My Right recording and all the Interesting sessions. It is from the guy from Disturbed. Has a real thick distortion that sounds great even plugged straight into the board and is still clear enough to hear my favorite new chord a #7 (the first chord in the chorus of Silver!). Todd bought a Zoom pedal of some sort but I don't really like it. I think I will buy a floorpod and see what I think. Live I have just used a clean and a distorted sound, but on the new recording will need a few other sounds. Now I have to explain something. I am not actually a guitar player. When Todd and I started the project, the idea was to always "get a guitar player later". We even tried out this great guitar player, but he refused to play the chords right. When I was recording I felt I wanted to stay away from power chords and try new and interesting triads, so I did (not to say there are no power chords there because there are!). But this guy felt a fourth sounded the same as a power chord and would only play power chords. Songs like Factory just sounded dumb, simple, and boring to me. So after alot of thinking I took up the guitar. (This is also why there are no real solos, but again I remember bands like DRI and SOD never having a sigle solo in thier entire career). OK so recording-wise I have a beautiful G&L bass with a hartke head and a Peavey BW speaker and that what I used for all the recordings except My Right. For most of 2008 we had my friend Jamie play bass and he used a Epiphone Thunderbird with later a Bearinger Speaker. Then he stopped showing up for practices, smoking marjiana makes many people lose whatever little ambition they have. Anyway. Todd bought a brand new Sonar kit in 2008. There is more gear but it is not relevant and I don't wish to bore you anymore.

Hahaha, stolen Razz
Oeh, an Ibaniz, that's awesome.
I have on pedal but I don't like using it, according to me, it doesn't sound natural anymore, no offence.. Smile

It seems you have great gear for a great band Smile
For my bass guitar I have a new amp, an Ashdown. It's a very good one, the sound is really clear and I like that Smile

I am getting excited! Today we recorded the last vocals for the new CD! With any luck we should have a new CD by November. I am listening to the (very) rough mixes right now, and am so pleased with the way everything has turned out so far. I think it is a bit heavier and faster and some of the songs are more complex and longer. So there will be 8 tracks this time. I am also excited because we decided to buy digipaks this time, and while more expensive I think they look better. We are shooting for around 10$ CAN. More info on our website Softbox

Just listening to some friends called Celestial Machine on the radio (local CFCR) while I catch up with MNC a bit.
So I have switched back to bass and we now have Jordan Tupper on the guitar. And the biggest and best news is our second CD should be out soon. Hopefully Apr 26 we will have the new 8 track CD in our mitts. And we're not afraid to mail them to yours! If your curious there is a sampler here

Finally figured out why the forum wouldn't let me log in. Had to re-set up the cookies for IE. Anyway, thanks for the encouragement Serbocop. You can hear quick samples of the whole album at our website (in the splash page) and I have an edited (about 4 minutes from 7) version of Interesting up in the player (on the website).

The new CD is finally here at my house and I would love to send one to yours. www.softboxmetal.com

We are charging 10$ CAN for the CD (I think your currency is darn close to ours right now), and a flat 4$ to ship. For paypal, just go to the buy page on our website (click on the greedy face holding the money) www.softboxmetal.com .If you don't do paypal, PM me and we'll see what we can work out.

I think it's important to try and be reasonable with the price. I know how hard things are and how important a few dollars can be. Also as a consumer, I remember how happy I was to buy the second Mars Volta album for 8$! The bottom line is, we are not doing this to make money, we are just hoping to break even (maybe). I know it might cost a bit more to ship, but I would rather have a copy in your hands, than sitting in the box with the others I have left to sell.

As a consumer, Paypal is a great service, I signed up through eBay and have used it now on many other sites. For example I couldn't get Gojira's From Mars to Sirius here so I ordered it and paid via paypal. Because they charge a small fee to sellers, some think of it as a nessessary evil, (like a booking agent). Let me know if you have any problems with the paypal buttons because they are hard to test.

Hello Machine,

Likewise, I come in every month hahaha. I have to tell you that the clean vocals in the above video are really good and that you should sing in that style. As for the music, I dont like it, the videos are weird and the quality sucks. The only thing I liked which was really good is the clean vocal part.

Im do play guitar, but I dont really consider myself a musician, so when I say the above, it is coming from a heavy metal listener.

You have several different melodies and riffs within on song which I think is too much. I think you should work more on producing a flowing melody. I see the above song as statement after statement, and It should be more of a story or a few stories. Thats the best way I can describe it at the moment.

When I listen to music, I expect the music to put me into one mood, with multiple feelings. Your music is very aggressive and has multiple moods with several different feelings.

You need to work on developing your sound and having the vocals fit with the melodies.

I dont know what your goals are, but if you want to get big, then dont waste your time on video making.

Let me know what you think.
